The Fastest Free WordPress Themes in 2026, Measured in Our Lab

Royal Elementor Kit (98.9) and Hello Elementor (93.1) are the lightest of 23 free themes we measured, but both lean on Elementor. Without it, pick Twenty Twenty-Two or GeneratePress.

Fastest free WordPress themes

The fastest free WordPress theme in our lab is Royal Elementor Kit, with 98.9 out of 100: the whole test page came to 14.2 KB and the server built it in a median 33.5 ms. Hello Elementor is second on 93.1 (15.0 KB, 39.0 ms). Twenty Twenty-Two (84.1), Twenty Twenty-Three (83.8) and GeneratePress (83.6) follow, close enough to call a three-way tie. We activated 25 free themes one at a time on the same post and ranked 23, mostly on how much each one makes the server send and how long the page takes to build.

Read the top two with care. Both are near-blank canvases made for the Elementor page builder, and the builder carries the cost: in our plugin lab the same day, Elementor alone added +133.7 ms of server time to a post that did not use it. Without Elementor, the lightest themes that are complete on their own are the default block themes and GeneratePress, between 18.0 and 22.2 KB.

Short answer: If you build with Elementor anyway, Hello Elementor (93.1) or Royal Elementor Kit (98.9) keep the theme out of its way. If you design the whole site in the block editor, take Twenty Twenty-Two (84.1) or Twenty Twenty-Three (83.8): 18.0 and 18.9 KB in 3 files. If you want a classic theme with sidebars and settings, take GeneratePress (83.6): 22.2 KB and a 98% rating from 1,427 ratings.

Score out of 100. Page KB = the whole test page (HTML plus every CSS and JS file it links), gzipped. Files = CSS and JS files. Server ms = median of three runs. WordPress.org data pulled and lab runs made 21 October 2026.

How we scored them

Each theme was installed from WordPress.org on 21 October 2026 and activated alone, with no plugins, on a fresh WordPress 7.1.3 install running PHP 8.5. We loaded the same 1,500-word test post as a logged-out visitor, three separate times.

  • Page weight, 60 points: the HTML plus every CSS and JS file the page links, gzipped. 15 KB or less scores 60, 150 KB or more scores 0.
  • Server time, 25 points: the median of three runs. The fastest theme’s median (33.5 ms) scores 25; 60 ms or more over it scores 0.
  • WordPress.org record, 15 points: the rating blended with 25 imaginary votes at 80%, as in our plugin lists, is worth 10. An update in the last 30 days adds 5, sliding to 0 at 365 days.

To be ranked, a theme needs 10,000+ installs and an update in the last 365 days. This measures what the theme makes the server send and how long the server takes to build the page. It is not a full browser speed test: we did not time how fast the page draws, and images and fonts are not counted.

Server time on this box drifts 15–40 ms between runs, so gaps under about 15 ms are noise: the top two (5.5 ms apart) are a tie, and so are the next four. Weight does not drift. The full method is on how we rank.

Why the top two are so light

Hello Elementor’s WordPress.org page calls it “a lightweight and minimalist WordPress theme” that “provides a solid foundation for users to build their own unique designs using the Elementor drag-and-drop site builder.” Royal Elementor Kit’s page opens with “Truly all in one Solution For Elementor Lovers” and says its templates were all “created with elementor page builder.”

On our plain post, with no plugins, both had little to load: 2 and 4 files. Headers, layouts and templates come from Elementor, and that is where the cost goes. In our plugin lab the same day, Elementor alone added +133.7 ms of server time to a post that used none of its layouts. That is about four times Royal Elementor Kit’s whole server time, and more than the 73.9 ms between our fastest and slowest themes.

We did not measure these themes with Elementor on. If you already build with Elementor, a light canvas under it makes sense, and these are the lightest we measured. If you do not, skip them.

The lightest theme that is complete on its own

Without Elementor, the lightest finished designs are four default block themes and GeneratePress: Twenty Twenty-Two at 18.0 KB, Twenty Twenty-Three at 18.9 KB, Twenty Twenty-Five at 20.1 KB and Twenty Twenty-Four at 20.6 KB, each in 3 files, and GeneratePress at 22.2 KB in 4. None loads a file from another domain. Choose a block theme to design in the site editor, GeneratePress for classic sidebars and settings.

1. Royal Elementor Kit, 98.9

Royal Elementor Kit is a theme for Elementor users. Its page lists 140+ Elementor templates, 100+ Elementor widgets, a theme builder and a popup builder.

Bare, it produced the smallest page we measured, 14.2 KB in 2 files, and the quickest median, 33.5 ms. It has a 100% rating from 92 ratings and 100,000+ installs, and was updated on 24 September 2026: full marks on both lab measures and 13.9 of 15 for its record.

Who it suits: people who will build every page in Elementor and want ready templates. Limitation: these numbers are the theme alone; the templates and widgets on its page are Elementor features.

2. Hello Elementor, 93.1

Hello Elementor is published by Elementor and “built specifically to work … with the Elementor site builder plugin,” says its page. It has 1M+ installs and was updated on 25 August 2026.

It sent 15.0 KB in 4 files and took a median 39.0 ms, with runs from 35.4 to 44.4 ms, so the 5.5 ms gap to first place means nothing. Most of its 5.8-point deficit is its WordPress.org record, mainly the rating: 84% from 129 ratings, against 100%.

Who it suits: Elementor users who want a blank canvas with no template kit attached. Limitation: its light page tells you little about what an Elementor-built page will cost.

3. Twenty Twenty-Two, 84.1

Twenty Twenty-Two is one of WordPress’s own default themes, a block theme built for the Site Editor. Its page says the colors, typography and layout of every page can be customized, and it includes dozens of block patterns.

It is the lightest theme here that is complete without a page builder: 18.0 KB in 3 files and a median 48.3 ms. It has 100,000+ installs and was updated on 19 August 2026.

Who it suits: block editor users who want the smallest page and will shape the design themselves. Limitation: a 64% rating from 70 ratings, the lowest in the top 10, worth 6.6 of 15 for its record.

4. Twenty Twenty-Three, 83.8

Twenty Twenty-Three starts from “a clean, blank base,” says its page, and ships ten style variations made by members of the WordPress community.

It weighed 18.9 KB in 3 files and took a median 50.1 ms, 1.8 ms behind Twenty Twenty-Two and well inside the noise. It has 300,000+ installs and the same 19 August 2026 update.

Who it suits: anyone who wants a light block theme and a quick change of look through style variations. Limitation: a 68% rating from 61 ratings.

5. GeneratePress, 83.6

GeneratePress calls itself “a lightweight WordPress theme built with a focus on speed and usability.” Its page lists 60+ color controls, 5 navigation locations, 5 sidebar layouts and 9 widget areas, and says it works with the major page builders and WooCommerce.

It sent 22.2 KB in 4 files (its page says a fresh install adds under 10 KB gzipped; our figure includes the post’s HTML) and took a median 53.3 ms. It has 500,000+ installs and a 98% rating from 1,427 ratings. We compare it with two rivals in GeneratePress vs Kadence vs Blocksy.

Who it suits: anyone who wants a classic theme with sidebars and widget areas at close to block-theme weight. Limitation: its last update was 1 December 2025, 324 days before our pull. With no update by 1 December 2026, it leaves this list under our 365-day rule.

6. Twenty Twenty-Four, 81.7

Twenty Twenty-Four comes with templates and patterns for a business, a blog or a portfolio, plus style variations and full page designs, says its page.

It weighed 20.6 KB in 3 files and took a median 56.7 ms. It has 500,000+ installs, a 76% rating from 39 ratings, and the 19 August 2026 update.

Who it suits: block editor users who want full-page designs to start from. Limitation: it trails Twenty Twenty-Two and Twenty Twenty-Three by 6.6 to 8.4 ms, which is noise, so treat the three as equals on speed.

7. Twenty Twenty-One, 80.9

Twenty Twenty-One is a classic default theme its page calls “a blank canvas for your ideas,” with block patterns and soft colors.

Its median of 44.3 ms is the quickest outside the Elementor pair, though Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Twenty, Storefront and Twenty Twenty-Two were all within 4.0 ms. It has 200,000+ installs, an 84% rating from 44 ratings, and the 19 August 2026 update.

Who it suits: people who prefer a classic theme. Limitation: at 36.9 KB in 4 files it sends about twice what Twenty Twenty-Two does, which costs it 9.7 of the 60 weight points.

8. Blocksy, 76.7

Blocksy is, in its page’s words, “a fast, modern WordPress theme with advanced WooCommerce support and full compatibility with the block editor.”

It has the best WordPress.org record in the list, 14.9 of 15: a 100% rating from 873 ratings and an update on 15 October 2026. It has 300,000+ installs. In the lab it sent 43.8 KB in 6 files and took a median 58.4 ms.

Who it suits: people who want an actively updated theme with WooCommerce support and accept about 26 KB more than Twenty Twenty-Two. Limitation: weight, 47.2 of 60, keeps it out of the top five.

9. Twenty Twenty-Five, 76.4

Twenty Twenty-Five “emphasizes simplicity and adaptability,” says its page, with patterns for services and landing pages and templates from text-focused to image-heavy.

It is light, 20.1 KB in 3 files, but its median of 68.0 ms was the slowest of the default block themes, 19.7 ms behind Twenty Twenty-Two, just past our noise line. It has 1M+ installs and an 80% rating from only 14 ratings.

Who it suits: block editor users who like its patterns and templates. Limitation: its last update was 20 May 2026, three months before the other default themes.

10. Twenty Twenty, 75.6

Twenty Twenty is the 2020 default theme. Its page says its centered content column and fine-tuned typography make it “perfect for traditional blogs.”

It took a median 47.1 ms, among the quickest, and has 200,000+ installs, an 88% rating from 68 ratings and the 19 August 2026 update.

Who it suits: classic bloggers who want a single centered column. Limitation: at 48.0 KB in 5 files it is the heaviest theme in the top 10.

The heaviest themes we measured

Some of the most popular multipurpose themes sit at the bottom. OceanWP calls itself “lightweight and highly extendable”; on our test post it sent 147.5 KB in 18 files, the most files of any theme, and took 92.9 ms. It has 400,000+ installs and a 98% rating from 5,715 ratings, but finishes 22nd of 23 on 15.9.

Colibri WP is last on 13.2: 150.1 KB in 8 files, one from another domain, and the slowest median, 107.4 ms.

Astra, “lightning-fast” by its page, is mid-table on weight (39.2 KB in 3 files), but its median of 104.5 ms was 71.0 ms over the fastest and scores 0 of 25. It is 15th on 63.7. Neve, “ultra-fast” by its page, sent only 27.8 KB but took 90.1 ms and is 13th.

These are bare-install numbers for one plain post. We cannot say how much of that weight a page using each theme’s own features would need.

Score = page weight (60) + server time (25) + WordPress.org record (15). “External” = files loaded from another domain. Weight comes from the first run (it does not drift); server time is the median of three runs. Spectra One and Ollie are under 10,000 installs, so they are not ranked.

What we left out, and why

Two themes we measured are under 10,000 installs, so they are not ranked: Spectra One (7,000+) and Ollie (6,000+), both block themes updated in the last two months. On the same formula they would have scored 71.5 and 69.4, between Sydney (73.2) and Neve (69.1).

No theme was dropped for age: all 25 were updated within 365 days. GeneratePress (1 December 2025) and Storefront (9 December 2025) are closest to the line. Premium themes are not part of this test.

How to choose a fast WordPress theme

  1. Decide on Elementor first. If you will use it, Hello Elementor or Royal Elementor Kit is the lightest base, and the builder will add more server time than the theme.
  2. If you will not, start with Twenty Twenty-Two, Twenty Twenty-Three or Twenty Twenty-Four for the block editor, or GeneratePress for a classic theme. All four sent 22.2 KB or less.
  3. Count the files. Each CSS or JS file is a separate download: the default block themes link 3, OceanWP 18.
  4. Prefer themes that load nothing from other domains. Storefront, Hestia and Colibri WP load one file from elsewhere, Lightning two.
  5. Check the last update; GeneratePress and Storefront are near the 365-day line.
  6. After switching, load a logged-out post on your own site and compare. Your plugins, images and fonts are not in our numbers.

Questions people ask

What is the fastest free WordPress theme?

In our lab, Royal Elementor Kit: 14.2 KB and a median 33.5 ms, for 98.9 out of 100. It is made for Elementor. Without a page builder, Twenty Twenty-Two (18.0 KB) and GeneratePress (22.2 KB) are the lightest complete themes.

Is Hello Elementor fast?

The theme alone is: 15.0 KB and 39.0 ms, second of 23. Elementor itself added +133.7 ms of server time in our plugin lab on a post that did not use it, so on a Hello Elementor site the builder is the bigger cost.

Is Astra a fast theme?

It is light, 39.2 KB in 3 files, but slow to build in our lab: 104.5 ms, second-slowest of 23. It ranks 15th here, lower than on lists that weigh ratings and installs more, such as our best free blog themes.

Are block themes faster than classic themes?

Not as a rule. The four default block themes sent 18.0 to 20.6 KB, but the block theme Extendable sent 38.0 KB and took 87.0 ms, while the classic GeneratePress sent 22.2 KB.

Is this the same as a PageSpeed or Core Web Vitals score?

No. We measure what the theme makes the server send (HTML, CSS and JS, gzipped) and how long the server takes to build the page, not how fast a browser draws it.
