Blocksy 90.8, Kadence 89.2, GeneratePress 78.1. GeneratePress is lightest but has gone 317 days without an update; Kadence builds the slowest single post.

GeneratePress vs Kadence vs Blocksy

Blocksy comes out ahead of the three with 90.8 out of 100, Kadence is close behind on 89.2, and GeneratePress is last on 78.1. GeneratePress was the lightest theme on both pages we measured, by a wide margin. It ranks lowest because its last WordPress.org update was on 1 December 2025, 317 days before our check, which leaves it 2.9 of 20 points for maintenance.

Blocksy leads on rating (100% from 873 ratings) and freshness (updated 6 days before our check). Kadence matches GeneratePress on installs and is lighter than Blocksy on the home page, but it built the heaviest and slowest single post in our lab: 56.4 KB and 60.8 ms, against 22.1 KB and 39.7 ms for GeneratePress and 43.6 KB and 35.4 ms for Blocksy.

Short answer: Pick Blocksy if you want the best-rated, most recently updated theme of the three. Pick Kadence if you want its header and footer builder and starter templates, and can accept the heaviest, slowest single post. Pick GeneratePress if page weight comes first and you are comfortable with a theme that has not had a WordPress.org update in 317 days.

WordPress.org data pulled 14 October 2026; days since last update as of that date. Page weights are HTML + CSS + JS, gzipped, measured in our lab.

How we scored them

These scores come from our ranking of free blog themes, where each theme gets a score out of 100 with these weights:

  • Satisfaction, 30: the WordPress.org star rating, adjusted so themes with few ratings cannot ride a handful of reviews.
  • Page weight, 30: the home page’s HTML, CSS and JS, gzipped, in our lab. 20 KB or less earns full marks, 180 KB or more earns 0.
  • Adoption, 20: active installs on a log scale, 10,000 = 0 and 1,000,000 = full marks.
  • Maintenance, 20: updated in the last 30 days earns full marks, sliding to 0 at 365 days.

Our lab is a fresh WordPress 7.1.3 install on PHP 8.5. For this comparison we also activated each theme with no plugins and loaded our test post, about 1,500 words with 3 images, as a logged-out visitor. That single post page is not part of the score; it is here because a blog is mostly posts. The method is on how we rank.

Satisfaction: Blocksy leads

Blocksy holds a 100% rating from 873 ratings. GeneratePress and Kadence both sit at 98%, from 1,427 and 455 ratings. After adjustment that is 29.6 of 30 for Blocksy, 28.3 for GeneratePress and 27.8 for Kadence.

GeneratePress has the most ratings of the three, so its 98% rests on the largest sample. The spread here is under 2 points, and it does not decide the order.

Adoption: Kadence and GeneratePress level

Kadence and GeneratePress each report 500,000+ active installs, worth 17.0 of 20. Blocksy reports 300,000+, worth 14.8. On a log scale the difference is modest, 2.2 points, and it is Blocksy’s only weak spot in the score.

Maintenance: where GeneratePress loses

Blocksy was updated on 8 October 2026, 6 days before our check, and takes the full 20 points. Kadence was last updated on 24 July 2026, 82 days before, for 16.9.

GeneratePress was last updated on WordPress.org on 1 December 2025, 317 days before our check, and gets 2.9 of 20. That single line costs it 17.1 points against Blocksy, more than all its other differences with Blocksy combined. Our scale reaches zero at 365 days.

Page weight: GeneratePress by a distance

On the home page GeneratePress weighed 17.8 KB with 2 CSS/JS files. Kadence weighed 33.5 KB and Blocksy 39.1 KB, with 5 files each. GeneratePress is under our 20 KB full-marks line and takes 30 of 30; Kadence gets 27.5 and Blocksy 26.4.

Because the scale runs all the way to 180 KB, all three score well here, and the lightest theme gains only 3.6 points over the heaviest. That is why being half the weight does not make up for the maintenance gap.

Lab: the single post page

The single post is where the three pull furthest apart. With no plugins, our test post weighed 22.1 KB under GeneratePress, 43.6 KB under Blocksy and 56.4 KB under Kadence. Kadence loaded 11 CSS/JS files on that page, against 6 for Blocksy and 4 for GeneratePress.

ThemeSingle post weightCSS/JS filesServer time (median of 3 runs)
GeneratePress22.1 KB439.7 ms
Blocksy43.6 KB635.4 ms
Kadence56.4 KB1160.8 ms
Twenty Twenty-Five (reference)19.8 KB360.7 ms
Our ~1,500-word test post, each theme active with no plugins, WordPress 7.1.3, PHP 8.5, logged-out visitor. Three interleaved runs per theme.

Server time varies between runs on a shared machine, so we ran each theme three times, interleaved, and report the median; page weight did not change between runs.

Blocksy built the page in 35.4 ms and GeneratePress in 39.7 ms. That 4.3 ms gap is within noise, so the two are level. Kadence took 60.8 ms, 21.1 ms slower than GeneratePress and 25.4 ms slower than Blocksy, which is a real difference in our test. Twenty Twenty-Five took 60.7 ms, the same as Kadence.

GeneratePress’s page says a fresh install “adds less than 10kb (gzipped) to your page size”. In our lab its single post was 2.3 KB heavier in total than the same post under Twenty Twenty-Five.

What each one does

These descriptions come from each theme’s WordPress.org page. All three are labelled “Commercial theme” there: “This theme is free but offers additional paid commercial upgrades or support.”

Blocksy

Blocksy describes itself as “a fast, modern WordPress theme with advanced WooCommerce support and full compatibility with the block editor”. Its feature tags include Accessibility ready, Block editor patterns, Block editor styles, Grid layout and Wide blocks.

Kadence

Kadence describes itself as a lightweight, full-featured theme for “fast loading and accessible websites”. Its page names a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, a library of starter templates, and global font and color controls. It is also tagged Accessibility ready.

GeneratePress

GeneratePress describes itself as “a lightweight WordPress theme built with a focus on speed and usability”. Its page lists 60+ color controls, dynamic typography, 5 navigation locations, 5 sidebar layouts, click or hover dropdown menus and 9 widget areas, and says it is compatible with page builders including Beaver Builder and Elementor.

GeneratePress vs Kadence

Kadence wins on the score, 89.2 to 78.1. The two tie on installs (500,000+) and rating (98%), and GeneratePress is far lighter: 17.8 KB against 33.5 KB on the home page, 22.1 KB against 56.4 KB on the single post, and 21.1 ms faster to build that post. The difference is maintenance: Kadence was updated 82 days before our check, GeneratePress 317 days before.

In GeneratePress vs Kadence, pick on what you weigh more. If page weight and server time are the priority, GeneratePress is the clear choice. If you want a theme with a recent release and a built-in header and footer builder, Kadence.

Kadence vs Blocksy

Blocksy edges it, 90.8 to 89.2. Blocksy has the better rating (100% against 98%) and a fresher update (6 days against 82). Kadence has more installs (500,000+ against 300,000+) and a lighter home page (33.5 KB against 39.1 KB).

On the single post the order flips: Blocksy was 12.8 KB lighter and 25.4 ms faster than Kadence. For a blog, which is mostly posts, Kadence vs Blocksy leans to Blocksy on the lab numbers too.

GeneratePress vs Blocksy

Blocksy scores 90.8 to GeneratePress’s 78.1, almost entirely on maintenance: 20 points against 2.9. GeneratePress has more installs and is lighter everywhere, with half Blocksy’s weight on the single post (22.1 KB against 43.6 KB). On server time they are level: 39.7 ms against 35.4 ms, a gap within noise.

So GeneratePress vs Blocksy is a choice between the lightest theme we measured and the most recently maintained one, with nothing between them on server time. Blocksy is heavier, but at 43.6 KB its single post is still lighter than Kadence’s.

Which should you pick

  • A new blog that wants a safe default: Blocksy. It has the highest score of the three, a 100% rating and an update 6 days before our check.
  • Page weight above everything: GeneratePress. It was the lightest on both pages and level with Blocksy on server time, but check its WordPress.org page for a newer release before you commit.
  • You want to build headers and footers visually: Kadence, whose page names a drag-and-drop header and footer builder. Expect the heaviest and slowest single post of the three.
  • Accessibility matters for your site: Blocksy or Kadence, the two tagged Accessibility ready on WordPress.org.
  • Your host runs an older WordPress: Kadence needs 6.3, GeneratePress 6.5 and Blocksy 6.7.
