The 14 Best Free WordPress Gallery Plugins in 2026, Ranked by Data
Envira Gallery is the best free WordPress gallery plugin on our data (89.0/100), ahead of MetaSlider (87.9) and FooGallery (87.8).
The best free WordPress gallery plugin on our data is Envira Gallery, with 89.0 out of 100. MetaSlider is second on 87.9, FooGallery third on 87.8 and Modula fourth on 87.5, so the top four sit within 1.5 points of each other. We scored 14 free gallery plugins on their WordPress.org record, the weight each one adds to a page and the server time it adds.
Weight split the list in two. Nine plugins added 1 KB or less to a page with no gallery on it; five loaded 40 KB or more, up to +159.0 KB. Envira Gallery won as the only plugin with full marks on both lab measures and on support. MetaSlider has the best WordPress.org score of the 14, but added a median +46.0 ms of server time.
Short answer: For a free gallery that adds nothing to your other pages, install Envira Gallery or FooGallery. For grids you arrange by dragging and resizing images, use Modula. If you mostly want sliders and carousels, use MetaSlider. For a photo archive with albums, ratings and visitor uploads, use WP Photo Album Plus and accept +159.0 KB on every page. For one simple grid, WordPress’s own Gallery block may be all you need.

How we scored them
A gallery plugin is active on every page, but most pages have no gallery. Our test post had none, so every lab number is an idle cost: what the plugin adds where it does nothing. A plugin that adds 0 KB loads its files only where a gallery appears; one that adds 80 KB loads them everywhere. We did not measure what any plugin costs on a page that shows a gallery. The score:
- WordPress.org record, 80 points: our usual score out of 100, scaled to 80. Satisfaction 35 (rating blended with 25 imaginary votes at 80%), Adoption 25 (installs, log scale, 1,000 = 0 and 1,000,000 = full), Maintenance 20 (full within 30 days of an update, zero at 365), Support 20 (share of the last two months’ threads resolved; under 3 threads = half marks).
- Weight, 10 points: 0 KB added = 10, 40 KB or more = 0, in a straight line between.
- Server time, 10 points: 10 ms or less added = 10, 100 ms or more = 0, in a straight line between.
Lab: fresh WordPress 7.1.3, PHP 8.5, Twenty Twenty-Five. Each plugin was installed from WordPress.org on 21 October 2026, activated alone with default settings and loaded by a logged-out visitor on a 1,500-word post with three images. Weight is the HTML plus every CSS and JS file, gzipped, minus the page with no plugin (19.8 KB). Server time is the median of 15 requests minus the no-plugin median, in three separate runs; we use the median of the three.
Server time on our box drifts 15–40 ms between runs (the no-plugin page took 61.4, 66.0 and 66.2 ms in the three runs), so we do not read anything into gaps under about 15 ms. Weight does not drift. The full method is on how we rank.
1. Envira Gallery, 89.0
Envira Gallery – Image Photo Gallery, Albums, Video Gallery, Slideshows & More builds galleries with drag and drop: upload photos, reorder them and publish. Every gallery comes with a responsive lightbox, and it works in the block editor, the classic editor and through shortcodes. Albums, video galleries, watermarking and WooCommerce are in Envira Gallery Pro, per its page.
It added +0.0 KB and a median +6.2 ms (runs: +6.2, +0.8, +6.8), full marks on both. It resolved all 5 recent support threads and is rated 94% (1,596 ratings). Its weakest part is adoption: 100,000+ installs earn 16.7 of 25. It suits anyone who wants a light gallery and can do without albums.
2. MetaSlider, 87.9
Slider, Gallery, and Carousel by MetaSlider – Image Slider, Video Slider is a slider plugin first. Its page calls it a responsive WordPress slider plugin and says it creates sliders, slideshows, carousels and galleries, which is why it is in this list. Image slides and video slides from your media library are free; YouTube, Vimeo and TikTok slides, layer slides and post feed slides are in MetaSlider Slideshow Pro.
On WordPress.org data alone it is first, 90.1, with the most installs here (500,000+), 92% (741 ratings) and 13 of 13 threads resolved. It added only +0.6 KB, but a median +46.0 ms of server time (runs: +38.8, +49.6, +46.0), worth 6.0 of 10. The three runs agree, and this is what put Envira Gallery ahead. Pick it if sliders are your main need.
3. FooGallery, 87.8
FooGallery Photo Gallery : Image, Video & Masonry Galleries has seven free layouts: Responsive, Image Viewer, Masonry, Portfolio, Justified, Single Thumbnail and Carousel. Video galleries, filtering and watermarking are FooGallery PRO features.
It added +0.0 KB and a median +9.1 ms (runs: +9.1, +7.6, +14.4), full marks on both. Its rating, 96% (993 ratings), is the best of the top five, it resolved 11 of 13 threads and was updated 19 October 2026. 4. Modula, 87.5
Modula Image Gallery – Photo Grid & Video Gallery centers on a drag-and-drop grid builder where you resize and move each image to make a custom grid. Its page lists Custom Grid, Masonry and Creative Gallery layouts and a built-in lightbox. Video, hover effects, filters, albums and watermarks are marked Pro.
It added +0.1 KB, resolved 14 of 15 threads and is rated 94% (616 ratings). Its server time is noisy: runs of +11.7, +5.7 and +50.8 ms. The median, +11.7 ms, is worth 9.8 of 10, but we would not rest much on it. It needs only PHP 5.6 and suits anyone who wants to place images by hand.
5. NextGEN Gallery, 84.0
Photo Gallery, Sliders, Proofing and Themes – NextGEN Gallery is the oldest plugin here, added to WordPress.org on 23 April 2007. The free version has three gallery styles (slideshow, thumbnail and imagebrowser) and two album styles (compact and extended), batch and zip uploads, and a block for the block editor. Its page calls it the lite version; proofing, ecommerce and print fulfillment belong to its paid editions.
It has the most ratings of the 14, 4,341, but at 86% the lowest rating in the top five, and the second most installs, 300,000+. It resolved 20 of 20 threads and added +0.0 KB. Server time cost it: a median +34.4 ms (runs: +10.3, +34.4, +38.2), worth 7.3 of 10. It suits photographers who want free albums.
6. Visual Portfolio, 79.0
Gallery by Visual Portfolio is built around gallery and portfolio blocks, with Masonry, Justified, Tiles, Grid and Slider layouts, prebuilt skins, an optional portfolio post type and a posts query builder for post grids. Its page says scripts and styles load only on pages that display a gallery, and our lab agrees: +0.9 KB.
It is rated 96% (340 ratings) and added a median +15.0 ms. Two things cost it points: only 2 recent support threads, which earns half marks, and 60,000+ installs. It suits sites that want a portfolio as well as galleries.
7. Robo Gallery, 79.0
Robo Gallery – Photo & Image Slider lists grid layouts including masonry, mosaic, justified and polaroid, a lightbox with fullscreen and slideshow modes, and a bulk uploader that can import from server folders. Its Pro list covers nested albums, YouTube galleries and many layout options, so check what is free.
It ties Visual Portfolio on 79.0. It added +0.0 KB and a median +9.3 ms, though its runs ranged from -0.9 to +15.6 ms. Its rating, 86% (405 ratings), and 40,000+ installs keep it out of the top five.

A lightbox slideshow, video galleries and lazy load are Pro.
It added +0.1 KB and a median +11.1 ms, and is rated 92% (498 ratings). Adoption is what holds it at ninth: 20,000+ installs earn 10.8 of 25.
10. Responsive Lightbox, 68.1
Responsive Lightbox & Gallery has a drag-and-drop gallery builder with Grid, Slider and Masonry templates, but its other half is the lightbox: 8 lightbox scripts, added automatically to WordPress image galleries, image links and YouTube and Vimeo links. That job may explain why it loads on every page.
Users rate it 98% (2,003 ratings), the best satisfaction score of the 14. Two numbers pull it down: +81.0 KB on a page with no gallery (12 files against 3), worth 0 of 10, and 1 of 7 recent threads resolved. Pick it for a lightbox across the whole site.
11. SimpLy Gallery, 67.5
SimpLy Gallery works in the block editor, with 8 free gallery blocks (Masonry, Justified, Grid, Slider / Carousel, Viewer, Albums, Album Navigator and Saved SimpLy Gallery), mixed images, video and audio, a page-level lightbox and media library folders. What we left out, and why
Nothing this month. All 14 plugins were open on WordPress.org, had more than 1,000 installs and had been updated within the last year; the oldest update, Gallery by BestWebSoft’s, was 64 days before our data pull. All 14 also ran in the lab without errors.
We did not score WordPress’s own Gallery block: it is part of WordPress, not a plugin, so it has no WordPress.org record to compare.
How to choose a WordPress gallery plugin
- Try the core Gallery block first. If a simple grid does the job, you need no plugin at all.
- List what you need beyond a grid: albums, masonry or justified layouts, a slider, video. Selling, proofing and watermarks are paid in most of these plugins.
- Prefer a plugin that adds nothing at idle: nine of the 14 added 1 KB or less.
- If you want a lightbox on every image across the site, accept that the plugin loads everywhere: Responsive Lightbox adds +81.0 KB.
- Read the free and Pro lines: albums are free in FooGallery, NextGEN Gallery and SimpLy Gallery, Pro in Envira Gallery and Modula.
- Time a page without a gallery before and after you install it, then check the page with the gallery on a phone.
Questions people ask
Which is the best free WordPress gallery plugin?
On our data, Envira Gallery, with 89.0 out of 100. MetaSlider (87.9), FooGallery (87.8) and Modula (87.5) are close behind. FooGallery is the pick if you want more free layouts and albums.
Do I need a plugin to make a gallery in WordPress?
Not for a simple grid: WordPress has a Gallery block. Plugins add albums, more layouts, their own lightboxes and video galleries.
Do gallery plugins slow down WordPress?
Some do on every page, even without a gallery. Nine of the 14 added 1 KB or less; five added 40 KB or more, up to +159.0 KB for WP Photo Album Plus. Median server time ranged from +5.7 ms to +49.7 ms. For the images themselves, see whether you need a lazy load plugin.
Is MetaSlider a gallery plugin?
It is mainly a slider plugin. Its page says it creates sliders, slideshows, carousels and galleries, and it scored second here, 87.9. For a grid of photos, Envira Gallery, FooGallery or Modula fit better.
Can I switch gallery plugins later?
Some plugins import from others. FooGallery’s page lists a migrator for Envira, NextGEN and Modula galleries, and Envira Gallery’s lists a NextGEN importer. Without one, expect to rebuild your galleries.
