The 10 Best Free WordPress Blog Themes in 2026, Ranked by Data

Bar chart of the top 10 free WordPress blog themes by score: Astra 96.0, Blocksy 90.8, Kadence 89.2, Neve 87.7, Twenty Twenty-Four 78.6, GeneratePress 78.1, Zakra 76.9, Twenty Twenty 76.3, Twenty Twenty-One 76.1, Sinatra 72.9

Astra is the best free WordPress blog theme in 2026 on our numbers, scoring 96.0 out of 100, followed by Blocksy (90.8) and Kadence (89.2). If page weight matters most to you, GeneratePress and Twenty Twenty-Four were the lightest themes in our top ten, at under 20 KB for a full home page.

We scored 28 popular free blog themes from the WordPress.org directory on four things: what users rate them, how many sites run them, how recently they were updated, and how much each one weighs on a real page in our own test install. No theme maker paid to be here, and no theme was left out because of who made it.

Last updated: 14 October 2026. We re-run the numbers every month.

Scores out of 100. Ratings and installs from WordPress.org on 14 October 2026; page weight measured by us the same day.

How we scored them

Every theme started from the same lab: a fresh WordPress 7.1 install, no plugins, twelve sample posts in three categories, and the theme switched on with its default settings. We loaded the home page and a single post and added up the HTML plus every stylesheet and script the page asked for, gzipped, the way a browser receives them. Images and fonts were left out because they depend on your content.

  • Satisfaction, 30 points. The WordPress.org rating, adjusted for how many people left one. A theme with few reviews is pulled toward an average of 80%, so 41 perfect reviews do not beat 6,000 near-perfect ones.
  • Page weight, 30 points. Full marks at 20 KB or less for the home page, sliding to zero at 180 KB.
  • Adoption, 20 points. Active installs on a log scale, from 10,000 (zero points) to 1,000,000 (full marks).
  • Maintenance, 20 points. Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, sliding to zero at a year.

To get into the pool a theme needed the “blog” tag, at least 10,000 active installs, at least 20 ratings and an update in the past year. The full method is on our How we rank page.

1. Astra, 96.0

Astra WordPress theme screenshot
Astra, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By Brainstorm Force.

Astra is the most installed theme in this set, at more than a million active sites, and it holds a 98% rating across 6,539 reviews, by far the biggest sample of any theme here. That sample size is why it beats themes with a perfect score: a 98% from thousands of people is harder to earn than a 100% from forty.

It is also light. Our lab home page came to 32.8 KB gzipped, with only two CSS/JS files, because Astra writes most of its styling inline instead of shipping a big stylesheet. The last update landed 20 days before we measured.

  • Best for: bloggers who want a huge pool of tutorials, starter sites and answers when they get stuck.
  • Watch out for: a lot of what you see in Astra demos (extra header layouts, blog layouts, more typography) lives in Astra Pro, a paid add-on. The free theme on its own is deliberately plain.
  • Requires: WordPress 5.3, PHP 5.3. Astra on WordPress.org.

2. Blocksy, 90.8

Blocksy WordPress theme screenshot
Blocksy, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By Creative Themes.

Blocksy is the only theme in our top ten with a perfect 100% rating on a large sample: 873 reviews. It was updated six days before we measured, the most recent of the leaders.

Home page weight was 39.1 KB gzipped across five files, a little heavier than Astra and Kadence but well inside what any blog can afford.

  • Best for: a modern-looking blog that you want to shape with a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, without paying first.
  • Watch out for: several features ship as extensions in the free Blocksy Companion plugin, and the rest in Blocksy Pro. Expect to install the companion plugin.
  • Requires: WordPress 6.7, PHP 7.0. Blocksy on WordPress.org.

3. Kadence, 89.2

Kadence WordPress theme screenshot
Kadence, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By Nexcess.

Kadence has half a million active installs and a 98% rating from 455 reviews. Its home page was among the lightest of the big names, at 33.5 KB gzipped.

The single post page is a different story: 53.5 KB, the biggest jump from home page to post in our top ten. We looked at why. Kadence turns on a related-posts carousel by default, which loads the Splide slider (one stylesheet plus two scripts) on every post. Switch the related posts off in the Customizer if you do not use them. The theme’s last update was 82 days before we measured, which cost it a few points.

  • Best for: people who also want Kadence Blocks for custom layouts; the two are made to work together.
  • Watch out for: the related-posts carousel described above, and that update gap.
  • Requires: WordPress 6.3, PHP 7.4. Kadence on WordPress.org.

4. Neve, 87.7

Neve WordPress theme screenshot
Neve, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By Themeisle.

Neve was the lightest of the four leaders: 23.0 KB gzipped for the home page, three files, nothing loaded from another domain. It has 200,000+ active installs and was updated seven days before we measured.

Its rating, 94% from 1,283 reviews, is the lowest of the top four, and that is the only thing holding it back here.

  • Best for: speed-minded bloggers who still want Customizer controls for the header, layout and colours.
  • Watch out for: read the recent one- and two-star reviews on WordPress.org before you commit; a 94% is good, but it is below its neighbours.
  • Requires: WordPress 5.5, PHP 7.0. Neve on WordPress.org.

5. Twenty Twenty-Four, 78.6

Twenty Twenty-Four WordPress theme screenshot
Twenty Twenty-Four, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By WordPress.org.

The 2024 default theme from the WordPress team is a block theme: you edit every template in the Site Editor, not the Customizer. It loaded 19.7 KB gzipped in our lab, and it runs on 500,000+ sites.

Its score is pulled down by its rating, 76% from only 39 reviews. Default themes collect few reviews, so a handful of low ones moves the average a lot.

  • Best for: a clean writing blog with no extra plugins, if you are happy working in the Site Editor.
  • Watch out for: if you never want to touch the Site Editor, pick a classic theme from this list instead.
  • Requires: WordPress 6.4, PHP 7.0. Twenty Twenty-Four on WordPress.org.

6. GeneratePress, 78.1

GeneratePress WordPress theme screenshot
GeneratePress, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By Tom.

GeneratePress is the lightest classic theme we measured: 17.8 KB gzipped, two files. It has 500,000+ installs and a 98% rating from 1,427 reviews.

On those numbers alone it would sit in the top three. It does not, because the free theme on WordPress.org had not been updated in 317 days when we measured (last release 1 December 2025). That may simply mean it is stable, but our score rewards active maintenance and we apply it the same way to every theme.

  • Best for: bloggers who care about speed above all and like a minimal starting point.
  • Watch out for: the update gap above, and that most layout options sit in GP Premium, a paid plugin.
  • Requires: WordPress 6.5, PHP 7.4. GeneratePress on WordPress.org.

7. Zakra, 76.9

Zakra WordPress theme screenshot
Zakra, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By ThemeGrill.

Zakra, from ThemeGrill, has a 98% rating from 600 reviews and was updated 28 days before we measured. It is smaller than the leaders, at 30,000+ installs, which lowers its adoption points.

Home page weight was 51.0 KB gzipped across five files, middle of the pack.

  • Best for: a conventional blog with a sidebar and plenty of Customizer settings.
  • Watch out for: it is a multipurpose theme with WooCommerce and page-builder support, so expect options you will never use on a plain blog.
  • Requires: WordPress any, PHP 7.4. Zakra on WordPress.org.

8. Twenty Twenty, 76.3

Twenty Twenty WordPress theme screenshot
Twenty Twenty, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By WordPress.org.

Twenty Twenty is a classic theme (Customizer, widgets) with big, centred typography that still reads well. 44.0 KB gzipped, 200,000+ installs, 88% from 68 reviews.

  • Best for: a single-column writing blog where the words are the design.
  • Watch out for: few layout choices; it was designed for long reads, not magazine-style front pages.
  • Requires: WordPress 4.7, PHP 5.2.4. Twenty Twenty on WordPress.org.

9. Twenty Twenty-One, 76.1

Twenty Twenty-One WordPress theme screenshot
Twenty Twenty-One, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By WordPress.org.

Twenty Twenty-One is the last classic default theme. It loaded 32.3 KB gzipped and runs on 200,000+ sites, with an 84% rating from 44 reviews. It includes an optional dark mode switch for visitors.

  • Best for: a simple pastel-toned blog that works with the Customizer and widgets.
  • Watch out for: like the other defaults, design options are limited by design.
  • Requires: WordPress 5.3, PHP 5.6. Twenty Twenty-One on WordPress.org.

10. Sinatra, 72.9

Sinatra WordPress theme screenshot
Sinatra, as shown on its WordPress.org listing. By sinatrateam.

Sinatra holds a perfect 100% rating, but from only 41 reviews, so our score shrinks it toward the average until more people weigh in. It was updated two days before we measured, the freshest theme in the top ten.

Home page weight was 43.4 KB gzipped, three files.

  • Best for: a small blog that wants a little more styling than the default themes offer.
  • Watch out for: a smaller user base (20,000+ installs) means fewer tutorials and forum answers.
  • Requires: WordPress 6.0, PHP 7.4. Sinatra on WordPress.org.

“Files” counts the stylesheets and scripts the home page loads. Measured 14 October 2026.

What we left out, and why

  • WordPress default themes from before 2020 (Twenty Ten through Twenty Sixteen). They are still maintained for old sites, but nobody starting a blog in 2026 should pick them. Twenty Twenty-Five missed the cut on ratings: it had only 14.
  • Royal Elementor Kit. It is built to be used with the Elementor page builder, so measuring it on its own would not be fair to it or to you.
  • Premium themes. This list is free themes from the WordPress.org directory only. Paid themes get their own lists.

Questions people ask

What is the best free WordPress theme for a blog in 2026?

On our scoring, Astra (96.0 out of 100), followed by Blocksy (90.8) and Kadence (89.2). All three are free on WordPress.org, highly rated, actively updated and light on the page.

What is the lightest free WordPress blog theme?

Of the themes we measured, Twenty Twenty-Three was the lightest at 13.8 KB gzipped for a home page. Among classic themes with full layout options, GeneratePress was lightest at 17.8 KB, followed by Page Builder Framework (20.9 KB) and Neve (23.0 KB).

Is Astra really free?

Yes. The Astra theme on WordPress.org is free and works on its own. Astra Pro is a separate paid plugin that adds more layouts and settings; you do not need it to run a blog.

Should I use a block theme or a classic theme for a new blog?

Pick a block theme, such as Twenty Twenty-Four, if you want to design every template yourself in the Site Editor. Pick a classic theme, such as Astra, Kadence, Neve or GeneratePress, if you prefer the Customizer and widgets. Both kinds are fully supported in WordPress 7.1.

How often is this list updated?

Every month. Ratings, installs and update dates change constantly, so we re-pull them from WordPress.org, re-measure every theme in the same lab, and change the date at the top of this page.
